about urban artifacts

Several times a year we get a chance to visit some of our artist's studios. This is fun and helpful for us for several reasons. It gives us a chance to get to know the artists better and in a different way. It also gives us greater insight into the work they are doing by seeing it in-progress, seeing the tools and techniques, environment, etc. Lastly, it is always fun because almost without exception, artists are fun, and great people to be around.

We caught up with our good friends, artists Billy Ray Mangham and his wife Beverly at a local show here in Houston. Watch for Beverly's work to be added to the site soon.

Stan Bonnes dons his safety gear and prepares for another day in the life of the studio artist. In case you can't make out the poster in the background it says "Gravity Kills" truly words to remember and live by.

Stan is the sort who takes that sort of message seriously and we have it on good authority that he is careful not to defy the laws of gravity- at least not in the daylight. He has a great and well organized studio in Boulder, Colorado. This gives hope to all who don't have much room- this proves you can do great things in small spaces if you use it all.
Kerri Buxton, and Brad Taylor in their Studio in Salt Lake City, UT. What a great work space and fun people! Located in a row of rennovated warehouses now converted to art space in downtown Salt Lake City. Great restaurants nearby as well as two brew pubs! How good can it get?

Here is a shot of Russ Pool and his crew who make the most wonderful wood boxes from exotic woods. Russ and his wife have built their home on the side of a hill outside of Durango, Colorado, in a place up the road in Wildcat Canyon. You can't help but think of the origin of that name as you drive up to see the place.
This is Russ' son taking a break from making a "cave" in the underbrush with his hedge clippers. A great kid living in a great place. Congratulations to Russ and his wife for a job well done.
